Catch the warning signs early
Boilers rarely fail without warning. More often they drop hints for weeks or months — a strange noise here, a dip in performance there — before finally giving up, usually on the coldest night of the year. Learning to spot these signs early can save you money, stress and a chilly wait for an emergency call-out.
1. Strange banging or clunking noises
A healthy boiler runs quietly. Loud banging, clunking or vibrating when it fires up often points to trapped air, a failing pump or water struggling to circulate. It’s worth investigating before the noise gets worse.
2. Kettling (a rumbling, boiling-kettle sound)
If your boiler sounds like a kettle coming to the boil, that’s “kettling” — usually caused by limescale or sludge building up on the heat exchanger. It reduces efficiency and puts stress on the unit, so it shouldn’t be ignored.
3. A yellow or orange flame
The flame on a gas boiler should burn crisp blue. A yellow, orange or flickering flame can indicate incomplete combustion and the risk of carbon monoxide — a colourless, odourless gas that can be fatal. Turn the boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.
4. Losing pressure repeatedly
Topping up your boiler’s pressure once in a while is normal. Having to do it every few days is not. Persistent pressure loss usually means a leak, a failing expansion vessel or a worn pressure relief valve.
5. Radiators not heating up properly
Cold spots at the bottom of radiators often mean sludge build-up, while cold tops usually mean trapped air. If bleeding the radiators doesn’t help, or the whole system is slow to warm, the boiler or pump may need attention.
6. Lukewarm or fluctuating hot water
Hot water that runs lukewarm, or swings hot and cold, can point to a faulty diverter valve, a worn thermostat or scaling inside the boiler. It’s a common early sign of wear, particularly in older units.
7. A rising gas or energy bill
If your usage habits haven’t changed but your bills are creeping up, your boiler may be losing efficiency. As boilers age or fur up with limescale, they burn more fuel to produce the same heat.
8. Frequent error codes or lockouts
Modern boilers display fault codes and sometimes shut down (lock out) to protect themselves. An occasional reset is fine, but repeated lockouts mean something needs diagnosing rather than ignoring.
9. Unpleasant smells
Any smell of gas — often described as rotten eggs — is an emergency. Leave the property, don’t touch electrical switches, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. A faint burning or musty smell when the boiler runs also warrants a professional check.
10. The boiler is simply getting old
Most boilers last around 10–15 years. If yours is in that range and showing any of the signs above, repairs may start to add up. It can become more economical to replace it with an efficient modern condensing model — though a good engineer will always tell you honestly whether a repair is the smarter option.
What you can safely check yourself
There are a few things a homeowner can do without any risk:
- Bleed your radiators to release trapped air.
- Top up the pressure using the filling loop (aim for around 1.0–1.5 bar when cold).
- Check the boiler’s flame colour visually, if there’s a viewing window.
- Reset the boiler once following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is fitted and working.
When to call a Gas Safe engineer
Anything beyond those basics — and especially anything involving gas, the flame, the flue or internal components — must be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer. This isn’t just best practice; it’s the law in the UK. A yellow flame, a gas smell or a suspected carbon monoxide leak should always be treated as urgent.
Booking an annual boiler service is the single best way to catch these faults early. A yearly check keeps your warranty valid, maintains efficiency and dramatically reduces the chance of a mid-winter breakdown.
