Why Summer Is the Best Time to Service Your Boiler

Beat the winter rush while the sun’s out

When the weather is warm and the heating is switched off, your boiler is the last thing on most people’s minds. That is exactly why summer is the ideal time to book a service. You avoid the autumn scramble, you catch small faults before they become expensive breakdowns, and you head into winter with complete peace of mind.

Here in Norwich and across Norfolk, our first properly cold snap can arrive quickly once autumn sets in. Sorting your boiler now, in July, means you are ready long before that first frost.

Why timing matters

The Energy Saving Trust and most boiler manufacturers recommend an annual service, and late spring or summer is widely regarded as the best window to book one. There are a few practical reasons for this:

  • Shorter waiting times. From October onwards, heating engineers across the region get very busy. In summer, appointments are far easier to arrange around your schedule.
  • Faults are found on your terms. If a service uncovers a worn part, you have time to sort it calmly, rather than facing a cold house and an emergency call-out in December.
  • You are not left without heating. Should any work be needed, going without your boiler for a day in July is a minor inconvenience. In January it is a genuine problem, especially for households with young children or older relatives.

What actually happens during a service

A proper boiler service is more than a quick glance. By law, this work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and only registered engineers are legally allowed to do it. A typical service includes:

  1. A visual inspection of the boiler and its pipework, checking for corrosion, leaks or damage.
  2. Checking that the boiler is fitted and operating safely, including tests for the risk of carbon monoxide.
  3. Inspecting key internal components such as the burner, heat exchanger and controls.
  4. Checking gas pressure and flow to make sure the boiler is running as it should.
  5. Cleaning parts where needed and confirming everything is working correctly.

You should receive a service record afterwards. Keep it somewhere safe, as you may need it for your warranty or if you sell your home.

The safety point people forget

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, which is why an annual check matters so much. One of the most important parts of a service is confirming there is no risk of a carbon monoxide leak. A working, correctly fitted carbon monoxide alarm is a sensible companion to regular servicing, but it is not a substitute for having a qualified engineer inspect the appliance itself.

Protecting your warranty and your wallet

If your boiler is still under warranty, an annual service is usually a condition of keeping that cover valid. Manufacturers such as Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi typically require a yearly service by a Gas Safe engineer, and missing it could void your guarantee. That is a risk worth avoiding, given how much a replacement boiler can cost.

There is a running-cost benefit too. A well-maintained boiler tends to run more efficiently than a neglected one, which helps keep your energy bills in check. With Ofgem confirming the energy price cap rose by around 13% from 1 July 2026, an efficiently running system is more valuable than ever. Just as importantly, spotting a small fault early is almost always cheaper than dealing with a full breakdown later.

A quick summer checklist for homeowners

While you wait for your service, there are a few simple things you can do yourself:

  • Switch the heating on for ten minutes, even in summer, to check it fires up and the radiators warm through.
  • Listen for unusual banging, gurgling or whistling noises.
  • Check the boiler pressure gauge sits within the normal range marked on the dial.
  • Look for any visible leaks, drips or staining around the unit.
  • Test your carbon monoxide alarm and replace the batteries if needed.

If anything seems off, mention it when you book. It helps your engineer arrive prepared.

Landlords, take note

If you let a property, the rules are stricter. Landlords are legally required to have gas appliances, including boilers, checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and to provide tenants with a gas safety record. Booking in summer makes it far easier to stay compliant without last-minute stress.
